What separates the North American Continent from Vancouver Island is the Straight of Georgia. As wide as 40 kilometres in some places it is barely a few hundred meters at others. It connects to the Pacific Ocean on both ends of Vancouver Island a mere 450 kilometres from South to North. It is a spectacular area well loved by sailing fans. Aside from this large water course what makes it a very special place is the islands spread all around. Some are wide and populated, others wild and mountainous. Many are tiny and isolated. And just think about their names: Salt Spring, Galiano, Valdes, Gabriola, Hornby, Denman, Lasqueti, Texada, Quadra or Cortez and many more! They are all different, all with their special aspects and attractions.
Je ne vais cependant pas écrire sur toutes ces îles. Je vais me concentrer sur celle que je connais maintenant assez bien et sur laquelle j'habites cet été. L'Île Protection.
I will not write about them all. Let's focus on only one, where I have been living for the last 4 months. Protection Island.

Quelles sont les options?
Notre société moderne valorise la vitesse, la diminution des pertes de temps. Dans ce cas, arrivant en avion, il faut repartir en avion. Pour ceux qui voyagent d'un autre endroit au Canada cela représente une surcharge. Mais pour un billet international le trajet jusqu'à Nanaimo sera inclus dans leur prix. Il y a un service aérien entre l'aéroport de Vancouver et la ville de Nanaimo, un service offert 3 ou 4 fois par jour sur des avions plus petits.  |

Un autre choix: agrémentons alors l'expérience en considérant l'aspect marin de la côte ouest. Il existe aussi un service d'hydravion entre Richmond, tout à côté de l'aéroport de Vancouver, sur la rivière Fraser, et le centre ville de Nanaimo. Un vol de moins de 15 minutes dans un monoplace en compagnie d'une dizaine de passengers et le pilote. Cet avion volant à basse altitude vous permet de suivre le trafic maritime sur le détroit de Georgia.

How to reach the Island? The first thing to consider is that almost anyone coming to Vancouver Island will do so from the mainland. The anchor point is Vancouver and knowing that many people will previously fly there let's start at the airport. For us now the first step is to go to Nanaimo which is on the other side of the Straight of Georgia, on the East coast of Vancouver Island.

important in our fast pace society! So coming to Vancouver by plane means leaving the airport also by plane. If you fly from any other town in Canada that will mean there will be extra cost but flying internationally it will be included in the price. Daily services (3 to 4 times a day) to Nanaimo brings you there in a smaller but fast plane.
Let's now not be so much in hurry but very efficient. You are coming on the West Coast where the sea is ever present so why not flying from Richmond (close to Vancouver Airport) to Nanaimo downtown on a seaplane! Within 15 minutes you will leave the Fraser river and dock in Nanaimo harbour. The flight will be interesting going over the Georgia Straight at low altitude and watching the action down there.

Tout çà c'est bien beau, vous êtes rapidement arrivés à Nanaimo. Mais je ne suis pas tout à fait d'accord avec l'idée de la vitesse. Le rythme de vie sur la côte ouest est légèrement différent de ce qui peut être vécue ailleurs au Canada et même dans plusieurs endroits à travers le monde. Le climat y fait pour beaucoup mais c'est, je crois, la présence de la mer qui joue un rôle de quiétude ici. Je suggères donc aux visiteurs potentiels de prendre le pouls de la situation. Quittez l'aéroport en taxi ou en train (sky train) et autobus pour vous rendre à Horseshoe Bay. Le trajet pourra vous paraître un peu long (90 minutes) mais cela vous permettra de traverser le centre ville de Vancouver et d'entrevoir les belles montagnes et la mer qui ceinturent la ville au nord et à l'ouest. Ce sera votre dernier contact avec la frénésie d'une ville nord américaine.

Here you are, landing in Nanaimo, it has been fast and interesting. But I do not totally agree with the speed experienced in this last leg of your travel. Coming to the West Coast one has to feel the difference in how life moves in a quieter and peaceful way here. It might be the weather that changes things but I believe it is mostly the presence of the sea that slows down the pace of life. So my strong suggestion is to reach Horseshoe Bay by taxi or train and bus. Yes it will take time, almost 90 minutes but you will have the chance to go through Vancouver and see how it is sided on the North by impressive mountains and on the West by the ocean. It will also be your last contact with the active North American life.

Et pourquoi Horseshoe Bay? Pourquoi traverser la ville puis longer les montagnes surplombant la mer? Pour la vue impressionnante mais aussi simplement pour se rendre au quai de traversiers pour Nanaimo. Un service efficace relie ces deux points à une fréquence de 8 ou 9 navires par jour. Il s'agit ici de gros navires transportant des centaines de véhicules et offrant plusieurs services à la clientèle. Un voyage unique d'une durée de 90 minutes permettant de goûter pleinement à l'air marin ainsi que d'admirer un panorama exceptionnel de majestueuses montagnes de chaque côtés du détroit. Mais surtout c'est l'occasion idéale pour bien sentir le passage du continent à l'île.

Why would I suggest so strongly to go to Horseshoe Bay! Yes the view from the mountain side to the Burrard Inlet and Vancouver Downtown is great but not only that. It is because there you will get a ferry to Nanaimo. You will go aboard one of these beautiful huge ship carrying hundreds of cars with all the services useful for this 90 minutes cruise. Then there will be the sea and the great mountains on both sides of the Georgia Straight. But mostly what I wish you to experience is the feeling of quietly and slowly moving away from the continent and reaching Vancouver Island!

On dit ici qu'il y a plus de soleil et moins de pluie qu'à Vancouver! Mais ce n'est pas encore votre destination. Votre but c'est d'atteindre une petite île se logeant dans la baie face au centre ville de Nanaimo, l'île Protection.
Alors on le fait en partie à pied le long du port, une belle randonnée de 45 minutes, mais avec des bagages il nous faut prendre un taxi ou l'autobus.

It is a beautiful place where some say it rains much less than on the other side of the Straight in Vancouver. But Nanaimo is not your destination, you have to go to Protection Island Just in front of the Downtown area.
So if you do not carry luggage and the sun is shining just take a walk along the seawall, a very pleasant 45 minutes hike. Otherwise a bus or taxi can carry you to the next ferry terminal.

La dernière étape à franchir maintenant que vous êtes au centre ville de Nanaimo c'est de descendre sur les quais et de vous rendre au point de départ du petit traversier qui vous amènera à Protection. Il s'agit cette fois d'un petit bateau qui fait la navette une fois l'heure, un court voyage de 10 minutes. Ce service est privé et appartient aux propriétaires du Pub Dinghy Dock, un restaurant flottant (le plus vaste au Canada), et seul commerce sur l'île. Il ne faut rien oublier puisqu'il n'y a pas d'endroit pour s'approvisionner sur l'île! Maintenant montez à bord de la salle d'attente du traversier!
You're almost there! The last step in this long process is the Protection Island ferry. You will find it in the harbour among many boats of all kind. It is called the Dinghy Dock Pub Ferry. It runs every hour and the sailing time is only 10 minutes. This small boat is operated by the owners of the only business by the Island, the Pub, a private operation. I did not say on the Island because this restaurant is a floating one, the largest of it's style in Canada. If you have everything you need for your stay on the Island wait a little in the nice waiting room and sail to the Island on this small ferry.

Voilà donc la démarche à suivre pour atteindre l'île Protection. Je suis partis de loin (Vancouver) bien entendu pour vous donner une idée du processus global. Il nous faut cependant regarder les choses du point de vue d'une personne résidant sur l'île. Alors les choses changent un peu. Pour une personne comme moi, vivant seul, l'utilisation du traversier est une chose courante. Je fais le voyage environ 2 fois par semaine mais quelques fois une seule fois par semaine. Il suffit de bien prévoir puisque les visites au supermarché ou tout autre commerce demandent un minimum de 2 heures....... Je fais donc partis des gens qui ont la vie facile ici. Voyons alors où çà se complique:

I really took the long way to talk about accessibility to the Island, starting way over there in Vancouver. That gives you a kind of global view. But for the Island regulars it might be more challenging. As for me I have the easy way. I live by myself and I am retired so my needs are simples. I use the ferry once or twice a week. It needs some planning because a simple visit to the supermarket or any other places will require about 2 hours....... So let's see how it can be different:

Les personnes qui doivent se rendre en ville régulièrement comme les travailleurs ou les quelques étudiants, peuvent utiliser le petit traversier. Cela cependant représente des déboursés que plusieurs personnes ne veulent pas affronter. Un passage simple étudiant/personne âgée est 3$, 4$ pour les autres (prix pour les résidents seulement). Alors il y a ici une autre option: l'embarcation personnelle. Plusieurs personnes possèdent un petit bateau et font la navette sans se soucier de contrainte horaire. Du côté ouest de l'île il y a 4 ou 5 quais dont un est communautaire.

Workers and students have to go to town everyday. Many do so on the ferry. But some consider the scheduling and pricing a little troublesome (students/retirees 3$ each passage 4$ for others and that is a resident price, for visitors it is a little more). This is why you will find a few docks on the West side of the Island, facing Nanaimo harbour. One of these docks is run by the community. This way some people can sail to town when they need to.

Et oui cet homme réside sur l'île Protection et va quelque fois faire des emplettes "en ville" avec son chien sur une planche! Un peu spécial peut-être? Pourquoi pas. Certains utilisent un kayak d'autres des embarcations à moteur ou encore des chaloupes à rames ou petits voiliers. Tout est possible la plupart du temps alors que les vents ne sont pas trop forts.
One day we met this man in Nanaimo leaving the dock for the Island! With his dog and grocery, as this was the most normal and regular thing to do! Would we say a little special way to travel? Maybe and why not! Some use their kayak others motor boats, canoes or row boats. All this is possible most of the time when the wind permits!

Et que se passe-t-il en cas de livraison pour des items un peu plus gros qu'un sac d'épicerie? Le traversier n'acceptera pas de transporter boîtes ou gros colis à l'exception de bicyclettes (2 ou 3 au maximum) ou valises pour des touristes en visite. Alors si un meuble ou des matériaux de construction sont nécessaire il faut un service de livraison efficace. Et la livraison doit se faire jusqu'à la porte des maisons. Peu de gens possèdent un véhicule assez gros...... La solution réside dans une petite entreprise privée particulièrement efficace avec une barge équipée de roues qu'un camion peut facilement remorquer.
All the above is OK for people or some daily needs like grocery items. The small ferry is not meant to carry cargo except for people's suitcases while visiting the island or their bicycle or some grocery bags. When someone decides to buy furniture or some construction material it is time to call a small private entreprise "Protection Island Supply" for an efficient delivery to the door step. To do so things are loaded on a barge which is equipped with wheels and can be towed by a pick up truck.
